Research Challenge

The right mix of hardware and software can result in unique and compelling interactions. For example, swinging a tennis racket in a video game is more fun with a Wii remote than a keyboard. The Segway lets you roll around by just leaning in the direction you want to go. Multi-touch devices support zooming in and out or panning with a touch of the fingers.

Identify one or more interactive activities or experiences that are awkward or impossible with today's technologies, and design a new hardware and software combination to enable those experiences. Entries will be judged on how compelling the interface is, the appeal of the experience, and the quality of the design (does it work? Is the design suited to the task?).

Submissions are open to any individuals or groups, but we particularly encourage groups of students to work with a faculty advisor. Class projects are appropriate for submission.

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission," and then select "create" for the Research Challenge submission form. You will be asked for:

  • Basic submission information, including submitter name, affiliation, and contact information, as well as title of the work, a single-sentence summary that introduces the achievements of your work (50 words or fewer), and a one-paragraph overview that highlights the innovations or significant accomplishments and contributions to the SIGGRAPH community (150 words or fewer).
  • One "representative image" suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials.
  • Statement of permissions to use the submitted materials.
  • A 300-word description of your submission to be used on the web site.
  • A one-page abstract describing your project and how it addresses the Research Challenge question.


  • Up to six supplementary images and/or a maximum five-minute supplementary video. We only accept uploaded videos in QuickTime MPEG-4 or DivX Version 6 formats, and the file size should not exceed 100 MB. The file must be uploaded using the online submission system.
  • Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.

New requirement: All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

Educator’s Resources Submission option. Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more

Submissions will be evaluated for creativity, aesthetics, quality of design, quality of implementation, quality of presentation, and how well the system addresses the Research Challenge question.

More specifically, your entry will be judged on:

  • The feasibility of the design. How easy is it to implement? How robust is it? We highly recommend that you submit a video of someone using the system.
  • The utility and usability of the resulting interface. Would anyone WANT to do the thing you've enabled, the way you've enabled it?
  • The efficiency and creativity of the design. Does it use an entire motion-tracking system when a Wii would suffice?

Acceptance of a submission means that the submitter is a finalist for the competition. At the conference, finalists will present their projects to a panel of distinguished judges, who will evaluate the work based on the above criteria. Finalists may include in their presentations work that they continued developing after the submission deadline.

You will be notified of your acceptance or rejection as a finalist around the end of May.
You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.
If you wish to attend SIGGRAPH 2010, registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributors of record, who will receive recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH 2010 Recognition Policy

You will receive information on when and where your project will be presented. You should prepare a short talk with video to demonstrate your project to the judges. Final scheduling details will be announced with the list of finalists, but you will have 10-15 minutes to present your work.
